Kenwood TM-V71a Review & walkthrough
Man, the K Series has four bikes with that fabulous engine. And it’s a known fact that the Grand America iteration is hard to feel well balanced beyond certain higher speeds…Trade it for one of the other three options. That’s not a flaw. It’s more a limit due to the character and design of that specific version of the BMW K1600. Swap the entire bike, not only the tyres! ✌🏻
I just purchased a new K1600B Grand America. I knew about the stability issues so I took a pretty long test ride before I got it and took it on the highway and at 90 mph it was very stable but a few years ago I rode a 2018 or 19 and that thing was scary. I told the dealer about it and bought something else. Im a little smaller than you though. 5"9" and about 212lbs.Chears from Minnesota.
I rode the K1600 B yesterday. I didn't like it!😢 It's a top heavy bike, and the pegs are under you like on an Adventure bike. I have bad knees, and need forward controls. I just purchased a New Rocket 3 GT, and it's much more comfortable, and it will soothe my soul. I miss my 2016 Rocket III, with 260hp, that burned up in a fire, but the New Rocket 3 is just better, as far as tech and looks. I will adapt 😂 Stay Safe Y'all!!! 😎
I bought my MPAS directly from Chameleon and it came with the sling bag. It doesn’t hold the 3’ whips for the cap hat though. So I need to come up with a solution for that.
Nice video. I have a HD touring bike and a GSA. Any R1250RT people out there have opinions on the RT vs the K1600B? I read an article (I know, one person's opinion), that the RT was superior to the 1600 as a touring bike. Any thoughts on that?
I've ridden the R1250RT for a short 50mi.... It seemed to torque steer in the corners when using throttle. A weird feeling to me. Otherwise it was great! But that boxer motor is proven to last a very long time! Plenty of Police Dept's out there are using them for Patrol Bikes. I'll have to check and see if I can rent one for a day.
It's not the tires. It's the adjustable windshield!😮
Very sparkly!?😂
OMG!!!😮
What's the major issue? Point is? Of course it's better than a Harley!!!😂
The major issue I get to is the highway wobble. Which many riders have also experienced. Not just me. Bike got traded in and it's no longer my problem. Yes, almost everything was better than the harley, but it's a moot point if the bike can't even track in a straight line at 65-90mph.
ruclips.net/video/DVxkSxRx6sQ/видео.html There is the problem
@@synonyx Yes, I rode the K1600B today, and I just couldn't get past how top heavy it was and the pegs were more under me than a moto-x bike. 👎 I went up the dealer parking lot and went straight back with a Big No. So... I'm going with the Triumph Rocket 3 GT. My 2016 Highly modified & highly customized Triumph Rocket III with 260hp & 190ft/lbs of torque Beast, burned up in a fire. So I'll Very Happy stay with a Triumph Rocket 3.
@@AGRIV8TD1963 Those are cool bikes. On my list to ride!
It’s low profile but I like the bigger back pack. You can never have enough space. 73.
Hello Syber, thank you for your detailed report. I can't really understand how you think you're in a position to give a rating after less than 1000 miles. I always have to smile a little when somebody compare HD and/or Indian with a BMW. A BMW will always be sportier than, for example, an HD or Indian, even if models of the brands have sport in their name ;-). And of course that also applies to the chassis and the damping. Comparing a 6 cylinder with a 2 cylinder is also difficult, in my opinion. I've driven HD several times in the USA and was always disappointed with the engine and shocked by the brakes. I haven't heard of the problems you're describing in Germany. A pseudo-problem in Europe is that some people report that the motorbike is a bit cumbersome in the Alps, you wouldn't believe it :-) As far as I know, the motorcycle is limited to 200 km/h in Europe. Have fun with the bike and a safe and enjoyable journey to all
By the time I traded the bike in last week, it had 800miles and I still felt the same way. Most well known motorcycle reviewers only do maybe 100-250mi on the bikes they review. I ran it through multiple roads that had plenty of twisties, and a 300mi road trip. That's plenty of time to form an opinion about the bike. I compared the two bikes (although very different) because they are both in the 'bagger' segment/market. The problem I describe is something plenty of others have complained about to on forums and facebook groups.
@@synonyx that really amazes me. After 800 miles you can of course form an opinion, especially as an experienced biker. I am not aware of these problems in Europe, hence the surprise. I don't think there are differences in the vehicles depending on the country. Could it be the tires? I drive an R1250 GS myself and have been riding motorcycles for over 40 years. The fact that BMW calls the motorcycle a bagger can certainly be a bit confusing; ultimately it is only called that because of the cases and wants to score points on the US market. In my opinion the HD is in the chopper segment and the 1600B is more of a tourer or cruiser. Anyway, it is interesting to talk about motorcycles over a distance of a few thousand miles. Have a nice weekend
@@michaelwesselmann5133 Well I swapped the tires and it helped quite a bit, but didn't resolve it 100%.
@@synonyx strange, I will check that issue in the Europe forums. after 5 GS modesl I'm thinking about a K 1600 B but your video let me take a bit more of investigation ;-)
Rather impressive when the bands are good and pretty much a wet noodle will work. But how impressive is it in bad bands conditions? Also hearing isn’t as good as getting out. You probably could’ve heard those stations with just a plan piece of wire.
I own the same bike just in Manhattan color, I have not had any issues with handling at all, but I check my pressure before every ride, and I also keep my rear pressure at 43lbs instead of 42 and it actually has made a world of difference in the handling, it keeps the nose down at all speeds, even at 120, don't ask me how I know. I have ridden plenty of times with no hands on bars, and I have not noticed any stability issues. This is my second one, I did not like my first one it was a 2018 K1600b, and it had stability issues. I test rode the 23, and I have not had any problems with ride quality.
BMW is fully aware of this issue; their deafening silence regarding this potentially life-ending issue speaks volumes.
They are and I got proof of it last week. I just traded the bike in yesterday because I am done trying all the avenues I have to get it sorted. Quite sad as this could have been the best touring bike on the planet.
absolute nonsense. The problem is not known in Europe, was mentioned in some forums as a US problem but could not be proven in the EU.
@@michaelwesselmann5133 Nonesense? Send me your email, I'll send you the service report where the dealership said "We are able to duplicate the issue" but because nothing mechanical was broken, they refused to do anything else. Just because you haven't experienced it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. PLENTY of people in the US have had the issue.
@@michaelwesselmann5133 Oh and did you even watch the video linked in the description? It shows the wobble CLEAR AS DAY!!!
I hv a 2023 K1600B w 3500 miles...so far absolutely no problems.. Still hv my 2010 road glide and 2004 softail heritage
Glad to hear it, wish I could say the same :( - The bike is a beast minus this issue.
@synonyx FYI, there is a recall on the 2023..a gas hose clamp. And a new download..I was at the dealership Thurs
@@thatwhatisaid Yeah mine got both of those a month or two ago at the first time they looked at the bike, it's been back there now again for almost two weeks about the wobble issue.
I have lusted for your bike for several years but for the exact reason you discuss at the end about oscillation I won't touch it. The speed is limited to something like 100 mph because BMW knows it is a problem, as reported by many other riders. I would love to dump my 15 year old Harley Ultra but I don't have any wobble or wandering at any speed, even over 100 mph. I am a big boy too at 280 lbs and 6'3" with feet at 14. That is my second problem with any BMW, no floorboards or pedals or pegs that I can manipulate with my feet. Why the tiny itsy bitsy foot controls? Excellent review of your bike, rare to find someone as well spoken and detailed as you have done, thanks.
Much appreciated.
Why not Goldwing?
Video title starts at 13:00
They say the not tracking straight has to do with the floorboards. The model with out them is good. Also the one with the tourpack on it is limited to 100mph because of aerodynamics
I want to sit in my home office and listen to and talk to folks. What do I need to purchase?
Well you would need a ham license first. Then a transceiver, power supply and antenna for starters.
@@synonyx ok bet
All the k 1600 b’s and GT’s have that issue. No other bikes have that issues. Harley’s Indians other bmw models triumphs Hondas. Perfect. But all my 1600 K bikes are terrible on the highway.
Thanks for your insight!
The menu "display partition..." What does that change?
Couldn't say - I no longer own the rig.
Enjoyed the video , I had a question about the weight ? I heard about them being mid 8 but I just got one from Zzounds that is 6.12 it also has a serial #V700254 , any idea how many they are making.
Mine was 8lbs 6oz - Crazy to hear you got one that lightweight. I don't think they've put a number on how many they are making, but their will be an order cutoff towards of the end of the year I am hearing. So we should be able to get them the rest of the year for sure.
You need the rite windshield and arrow wings,it solved my buffering on my 2018BGA,also I've heard the floor boards may be a issue. Get the Bren tune
I got the upgraded windshield. What did you use for aero wings?
Mine did the exact same thing in the case when I got it from sweetwater. It actually left a few scuffs on the top side that thankfully buffed out.
So, have you traded it away yet?
aerodynamics are bad, thats why it's speed limited. BMW isn't going to fix it because there isn't a fix. additionally, when it comes down to a safety item on any vehicle? The manufacturer will never own up to it because when they do, they will have to recall and fix every one of those motorcycles. It's just like Harley Davidson, owning up to the fact that they built a defective transmission and oil supply system for the engine when they first produced M8. they would have to recall every one of those first generation MA8 engine transmission combination and fix the problem. Therefore, they will never own up to it. They will never ever give you your money back they will never ever in any kind of formal communication Admit there's a problem. and I can promise you the GT does not have the problem. I test rode a GT at 125 miles an hour and it's rock solid even around the air from other cars on a motorway.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah my thoughts are that it's the bags and the rear suspension being slightly lower than the GT model. Otherwise seems the front end is mostly the same to me. I am tempted to remove the bags off of my K1600B and see what happens. The M8 oil sumping was something a lot of owners were never reimbursed for either. Yeap I've spoke to three GT owners near me and all of them looked at me like I was crazy when I asked them if they had the wobble or symptoms like it. They both said rock solid, stable and smooth up past triple digits.

The title says major issues and early on you say there aren’t any issues. Clicking close on the video was the result of your contradiction.
If you watch until the end I talk about it.... It IS a major issue. How are you supposed to tour on a bike with instability for thousands of miles? When I stopped at the peak, I was trying to enjoy the view rather than focus on the negative of the moment. Which is why I collected my thoughts and on the way home I stopped to talk about it. This bike could have hands down been the best touring machine I've ever ridden, which is why I spent most of the first part talking about all of the things I liked about it. It's got some amazing features, but all of the that is null if the bike has an issue on the highway.
I have the 2019 Grand America and it drifts quite a bit. Scary as $h!+ when it mysteriously occurs. Michelins didn’t fix my problem.
Welp, you understand EXACTLY what I mean then.
Congrats my friend! Such an axe 🔥🧯
How much does it cost to get a permit for the death valley drive?
No park entry fees anywhere I went that day.
@@synonyx thanks. Nice video.
5/15/24 Update - As of now, my bike still wobbles and it hasn't been fixed. The service center didn't find any issues with the bike and said "It rides like other K1600B's, its just the way the bike is for some people unfortunately". BMW stated to me "The bike is operating as designed" - Nice so, instability behind a truck or car is as designed? Harley doesn't have this issue, nor does Honda on their touring model bikes. I've ridden a ton of them over the years. I've got an update video in the works which will showcase the problem and comments from other owners. I've reached out to the heads of BMW with no resolve as of now, they told me 7 to 10 days they would have an answer for me on how they intend to help. We still have a few days left in that time period. I will keep everyone updated, but as I of now, I would HIGHLY recommend NOT purchasing one of these bikes without a very through test ride on a highway.
B is a beautiful bike. I was looking to get one but I will avoid it until BMW takes ownership and rectifies. Hate that corp playing dumb sh**!
What's crazy to me is a simple rear shock upgrade or aero kit could probably solve the problem. Super easy fix to keep customers happy.
All saddle bags be off correct.
I would take them off to try that theory, but they aren't that easy to remove like most bikes.
Great vid. I have the exact same bike as you. I love the side stand position, it’s just great for me. Bike also stable and no wobble or weave. Keep an eye on oil consumption it can be a bit erratic on times. Mine came from the factory full of oil, right up to the top of the oil filler. Thankfully I noticed it within the first 50 miles of break in and corrected it. Enjoy the ride. All the best.
Hello, what is the length of the windshield you put on the bike and what is your height. Great review 👍
I'm 5'10" - I used the standard klock werks screen.
Navigation from BMW is a joke
It's really nice when it works. But even HD's navigation is better than this because it doesn't require a phone to be on in order to work. I might try and play with it some more today. Carplay would have been HUGE on this bike.
@@synonyx I have been mucking with it now for 5 months on my 23 RT. BMW really screwed up with this. I haven’t spoken with nor met a single user at our local club or dealer employee or forum that can use it or uses it. All have switched to something else. For single day rides with no stops it’s functional. Other than that it sucks.
This issue also reminds me of the s1000xr vibration issue..sometimes social media is great ! I was able to steal one because of it! All in-line 4s have vibration..even Honda..it was an easy resolve..
I have a 22 and an 18 prior..no wiggle for me..trucks on the interstate are troublesome..I learned to keep tire pressure up on the 18..I mistakenly ran them at 32 for too long..went to mich gt5..sweet difference…I also dislike the nav requiring my phone..
My 2023 is perfect and drives like a dream. You do have to take care of your tires and keep them properly inflated and not have flat spots.
Regarding the oscillation issue,,,,,, I use to weigh in at 290-315 lbs.. Wether I was riding a bicycle or my motorcycle, all that extra up top weight definitely had a similar effect while riding . I’m now at 240-250 lbs. and no longer have this issue.
iTS NOT YOUR WEIGHT, IM 200, FRIENDS ALL OVER THE FORUM LESS WEIGHT.
I just bought a ‘23 K1600 B, 2 months ago. I’ve read up a bunch on the road oscillation problem, and other folks take on them. Full disclosure: I had a ‘13 K1600GT for 10 years before trading for this one, and it never displayed the problem: rock stable on the highway, regardless of the air. One interesting comment I’ve heard is that the windscreen may be a contributor to the airflow problem; that changing to a taller/wider ‘screen may help quite a bit. For my own bike, I’ve never experienced this problem (yet!). I can basically ride hands off for quite a distance without wandering laterally. But, I’ve only got about 350 miles on my bike due to late winter/early spring snowfalls. I’ve also heard that the Grand America seems to be worse in this regard, suggesting that the top case is also a contributor to the airflow oscillation.
So are you experiencing it on your B model? - I've been told by countless others the GT doesn't have it. I changed to a klock werks windscreen (they wind tunnel tested it) and it didn't help nor make the issue any worse. I've also read the GA model is worse too. I've got an update video coming, but basically BMW corporate keeps telling me "The bike is operating as designed, that's just how the bike is" Well since that wasn't disclosed to me, I want nothing to do with the bike. I hope others see this video and go do their own test ride to see if it's an issue for them before buying it.
My 2017 GT has that very issue, but not all the time...
You need to see this video BMW K1600 G A UNSTABLE NO MORE
I can't believe I made it to the 6 minute mark.....
Why ?
I’ve got a 22GA. I could write a book on this.
I have the B version and have noticed the wind behind trucks etc on the highway. As far as I can tell it's the windshield. I had a 7 Jurock installed and depending on how much you put it up depends on how much you feel it. I tried a GT wind shield and it definetly changed. I just installed the Klock Werks like you have. That shield works much better when its down all the way in general so I will keep you posted. The BMW has a much higher center of gravity than the Harley, I also switched, so I think that's what we are feeling. The wind from truck impacts cars sometimes so to say some don't feel it is just not realistic, it's just so much different than Harleys.
I would describe it as less stable than an HD. I've done about 2000mi touring on a BMW s1000XR and it has a higher center of gravity than the HD/K1600 and never felt instability like this. From what I can see seat wise, it's in almost the same position height wise as the HD.
Keeping the shield down riding in dynamic mode, I felt less movement than before. I have a Klock Werks 20 inch shield. I went out for a quick 20 mile ride today, mostly highway.
@@briansullivan9825 Tried to do that myself but the buffeting was so crazy at 65mph with the shield down.
@@synonyx I am 6ft tall I had a half helmet on. There was wind but not terrible and not bouncing my glasses all over, I could still hear my cardo speakers ok. Sorry I couln't help.
I also already heard about the oscillating problem with another model which is Grand America, which it broke the deal So it now seems Bagger also has the same thing. It seems like it is a major design faulr Did they solve the issue ?
BMW has not. New tires, windscreen, playing with the suspension settings and tire PSI did nothing for me. From what others have researched, it's an aerodynamic flaw.
